Genre research: Romance and crime

When it came down to research two types of genres. I decided to do romance and crime since those carry similar elements to what our film is destined to be.

Romance:

Common Camera Angles:

high angels. low shots, medium to medium closeup shots, with some point of view shots, and many two shots

Common Lighting:

very bright and well-lit with of use of colors (tints)

Common sounds:
Sounds are usually music used in the background during the film. It is lighthearted music to keep the tone and the romance going.

Acting

encompasses and hinges on various emotions such as envy/ jealousy, happiness, sadness, and anger

Make-up:

more often than not, makeup is little to none for casual look expect when the scene calls for more

Props

no real commonalities found within this genre expect for the arguably infamous book/paper fall with wedding attire, alters, and rings being a close second

Setting

most contemporary settings would be a high school, seeing that there are many "teen-love" stories

Liked Elements:

The pacing of a movie matters most to me, and I feel, within most romance movies, the pacing is executed quite nicely

Disliked Elements:

Though classic, the Romeo and Juliet trope as been played over and over; with the lovers always having to overcome some major and unreasonable obstacle to be together

Crime:
Common Camera Angles:
High/Low angles, Close up/Extreme close ups and Handheld shots. These are done to create the feeling of suspense and intensity.
Common Lighting:
Black lighting: “Comes from behind subjects, making them appear to have a silhouette.”
Low key/High key lighting: “Low key is made by key and black lights, deep shadows, creating sinister and dark tones. High key is made using multiple filler lights to make the scene feel more realistic.”
Under lighting/Top lighting: “Under lighting’s main source of light comes from below the subject, masking their identity. Top lighting is made by light being placed above the subject, making their face stand out.”
Common sounds:
Music would be suspenseful, maybe classical music or dramatic music. There would also be many foleys, like quiet footsteps or a gun being shot.
Acting:
Actors usually focus on knowing things like the element of surprise and being able to have a monster character and doing it well. Since crime can become brutal the actor needs to have strength.
Makeup:
The makeup usually isn't done to be very obvious. It involves a natural touch since dark and mysterious is usually the aim.
Props:
Some common props are cop cars, yellow caution tape, suits, blood, weapons.
Settings:
Setting could be place the crime took place. For example: a house, a car, a restaurant. There is also common ly a police building or a detectives office.
Liked elements:
"I appreciate that crime films typically have really creative establishing shots. I like how no matter how insignificant a character may be, they still have an extremely dramatic death."
Disliked elements:
A lot of crime movies, " some take too long to build a plot and some jump right into it"
