Editing

Today is editing and this is the first big stump within this commercial. There is currently a computer malfunction and we are unable to edit our film. The app pinnacle studios is not working. When we try to click the app it ask for a password, our teachers told us that unfortunately the computers wont work and we would have to continue next class. Initially we were gonna use the story board to place our footage in order. We had a script that we were gonna use to help outline the dialogue within the film. One of our group members added in color to the story board to set a guideline for where films being placed. Since we could not open the app nor upload our videos onto it so we ended up saving the film on google drive. At first I was stressed that we didn't get to edit today but then I realized we have even more time to understand what we really want this commercial to end up as.
Even though we cant edit our film we were still able to discuss what we would do. As a group, we watched some of the film and it appeared to be good film. Watching some of the shots, there were a lot of mistakes. There were many times where somebody laughed or did something wrong or said something wrong. We want to use this extra film to make  bloopers. Another negative was an odd angle when filming, the film didn't turn out exact to what we wanted. Observing for the commercial, there was film that had long enough scenes that looked professional that we will be using in the real commercial. When we looked at the film it was to have a general view of how everything would align. One worry i have is the first clip which is a team member counting down the race, I am not sure it will go smoothly with the next clip yet we will make it work.
We all had different roles when filming but during editing we will all be working on one computer so we are going to have a main person edit, Victoria. Throughout this process everyone will have the opportunity to go through the edited film and put their input. I will be able to watch which clips Victoria puts into the edited film and either approve or disapprove. In all honestly this sets back our commercial process since we will now have to finish editing and wrapping up quicker. On the other hand, we could have more time to work on editing or understanding the app if we can come in tomorrow in our free time and work on the film. Having the film on google drive is actually helpful for us. I feel as if google drive is a very secure place to store film or documents so even if pinnacle studios were to crash again, our film is still secured in a reliable app. Since we most likely wont use our free time to work on the commercial, we will have to finish editing next class. One perk about this is that my group discussed more about how we are handling sound and the script. We did decide to do a voiceover and try to incorporate sounds into the commercial.

Filming Blog

The filming process was my favorite throughout this journey. I will admit, at first I was confused at what we were doing since my group had discussed without me the official game plan for filming when I was absent. I soon caught on and understood the way we were shooting our scenes. Since the weather was good we got to continue with plan A and go onto the track. If it had rained we would have had to go with plan B and all our roles would have been switched. The group decided to change the timeline and shoot scenes in a different order. My main role within filming was the actor that was a runner. The other roles were filming it, the other runner and a Dunkin' employee. Since I do not mind being on camera and doing whichever role, I just decided to be the person that is on camera the most.
The first thing we did was go onto the track to begin filming. One of my scenes, I had to dress in pajamas and I wore a onesie to depict that tired look. The negative part of this costume was how hot it was outside, because the onesie covered me completely, i was sweating a lot. The first shot they took where I was in it was when I was on the starting line, I had to seem tired, and not prepared to begin this race. I do not act, so I was not sure if I did a good job of acting tired but I'm sure it turned out well. There were times where we had to stop filming because the lighting became completely off and we did not want the film to look unnatural. In my role, I consume Dunkin donuts after being tired and immediately become ready to run. The shot where I am stuffing Dunkin donuts in my mouth did make me a little bit uncomfortable as the camera was in my face while I ate but overall it was a fun scene to shoot. Similar to the first shot, I got on the starting line again and acted ready to run the race with athletic clothes and a positive attitude. When the race starts, I race another person and I beat them completely. My favorite line is said when I run up to the Dunkin employee and give her thanks and she tells me, "didn't you know? America runs off Dunkin" This was done to show irony and portray Dunkin's slogan.
Our biggest worry with the way we shot the film at different times is that the overall film may look very stop and go instead of flowing smoothly. Due to running on limited time we weren't able to rewatch every take and see if it was something to work with. We had to trust that the film would turn out good enough to be edited and cut. The one scene we didn't retake several times is the shot of the guy saying 3,2,1 to countdown the racers. Knowing that there is only one shot of it, we know we will have to work with it. Even though there are always negatives within filming, there are good things about our film process. For example, being prepared came in handy as we had donuts from Dunkin for the eating shot, a coffee cup for when I pretend to chug coffee, costumes for the Dunkin worker, for our athletic shot and for the tired shot. Overall the film process seemed to go smoothly and hopefully there are no great errors that we can not fix.

Story boarding

This is the storyboard my group came up with. The day we worked on this, I wasn't in school so I had to trust that my team would do a good job and keep the story the same. The story board, in my opinion turned out really good, they kept it simple and on target with how we wanted it to turn out. The pictures uploaded do not show the final project, we did add some color to the pictures, like green and red. The factors that made the picture very good was the simplicity of the drawings, there isn't deep detail of a face or the background yet the message is still well perceived in these pictures. I really like that I can imagine these actions taking place, we have a head start in placing our bodies into the film. We already know how much of somebody we want to see within the film, for example a long shot, which plans to get our entire bodies or a close up which plans to get our face and emotion. When talking to my group about the process of the drawings, they explained that they just explained the scenario and then did a picture. The trick to making these pictures turn out good was not overthinking or trying to be an artist but to just draw something that makes sense and could be reliable. There are two boxes that have an over the shoulder shot drawing, yet is not expressed in the title so I am unsure of whether we do not want to film that or we forgot to put it in the title. The last thing we need to hope for Is the weather to stay sunny or at least dry out so that the track and the exhaustion of heat is represented well in film.

Editing blog

Today we as a class went over editing for our commercial. I personally found this a bit easy since I have a MacBook Air and I love playing around with iMovie and making little clips. There were lots of similarities with iMovie and the new app that we have to use called Pinnacle Studios. For example,  the way titles go on top , the film in the middle and the music at the bottom. That set up was familiar to me as I have used all three of those to make a fun film. Detaching audio was familiar to me as well , since the past videos I have made were videos that focused on a song , not the audio within the film. Importing was an action that I am familiar with as well, I had to import lots of film from my phone to make videos. This time I will be using a camera so I have to get used to taking film from an SD card and putting it onto the computer then the app.
The procedure is pretty simple, I took notes on the things I found important that I may forget in the future. My steps include “dumping”, “importing” and “saving”. Some important notes for me was, the app name, pinnacle Studios since I have never heard of it before. I saved some names of files that is important to finding film, for example the folder called DCIM. I also included the information for what to do Incase you can’t find the film, you have to go onto the private folder. For the important section, my steps include: edit, import, desktop, +sign, comm. One tip I noted was to always click “ok” if not, the action may not actually be saved. An important word we were told to remember was “raw footage” , this is important when bringing the film from your desktop to the actual app itself.
Saving is the last part of completing this commercial. When exporting I found it really important to write down what the standards need to be. For example when exporting you have to make sure the movie is MPEG-4 if not it will not be a movie, also it needs to be full size SD. Before we started the editing notes we had a basic tutorial of how to use the equipment. I am not artistic nor into filming so I am not used to using cameras or tripods. These tips were helpful so that I don’t mess anything up when using these things. We learned how to put the camera onto the tripod which was helpful. We were told how to sign out and sign in equipment. I have an iPhone 6 so my film would turn out terrible which is the reason why I am using the schools camera. I also feel as if sticking with standard guidelines will be the best way to have a good commercial, especially if I need to ask questions, if I am doing something with different equipment I won’t be able to get the best help. Overall, this lesson was very helpful to moving forward with this project.

Planning blog

Today is October 10 and the planning has started. We’ve Decided our product and today we talk out the details to Have a better idea of what this commercial will look like. We discuss the plot of the scene, the costumes we will wear, the location and the props.
The props we’ve decided on incorporating into the commercial will be as follows; a Dunkin hot cup, an apron with the logo, the work uniform (Khakis with a white formal tree-shirt), a big white paper bag with the logo, a small paper bag with the logo (for a doughnut), track wear (shirt, shorts, sneakers), a Whistle, pajamas, and real doughnuts for when we film the commercial. The different props will be used in different parts of the film. The Dunkin’ Donuts branded things will come in as we introduce the product. This will add a sort of suspense to the commercial. This will heighten the intrigue of the product for the people watching.
The costumes we will be incorporating into the commercial will be; the work uniform (Khakis with a white formal tree-shirt),track wear (shirt, shorts, sneakers), and pajamas. This will create a hidden meaning behind the different people doing different things in the short commercial. The two people that will be wearing the track and pajamas will be acting in the film to creat a metaphor. The person wearing the Dunkin’ Donuts uniform will be a symbol for the brand itself. The person filming will wear no costume however the rest of the people in the group will. The people who are acting will try to convey the what the motto of the brand is incorporated into the product itself as well.
For the rest of the project, we have a standard we hope to achieve each class. For today, 10/10 we will finish our planning and the basics for filming. Next week on the 14th we will work and finish on our story boards. This will prepare us for what we expect our filming to end up like. On the 21st, we will bring our costumes, props, and go out to the location we chose and start filming. This is the most important date as we have once chance to film and unexpected events like rain could occur and we are forced to change our locations. The last day is 10/23 where we officially edit all the film together and make sure the commercial makes sense and runs smoothly.
For the location of the film the group has decided on the use of the school track, this will play into  the motto that the brand has. This creates humor and a clear understanding on what the commercial is trying to convey to the audience. The costumes and props will all tie into the location of the track, to hopefully succeed in the feelings the actresses that are being filmed will express. This will also give adequate lighting and good sound control for our film. The quality of the different angels will be better when we film the commercial shoots and takes when we film outside. Natural lighting will look better on the product than a top high a consent ration of light. This will make the food stand out over the dark contrast of the surrounding area of the track. This will also make the person who is metaphorically acting as the brand to also stand out.
The back-up plan we have decided to use in case of or rain or an unfortunate event will be a new scene and a new location.  The script will change to better express what the brands motto is. We would change the costumes, by changing the track outfits to regular school outfit. Most likely jeans a shirt or pajamas to exaggerate the tiredness within the student. The people in the group will act like students instead of being track runners. The people who were planning to run will put out the scene of a tired student bumping into the other who has had a delicious cup of coffee from Dunkin already. However the student who is tired is so tired they drop all of their things and fall asleep. To wake the student the other one will wake them up with the smell of the coffee. This will cut to a scene of the student being more energetic and able to continue walking to their next class. This will express the brands motto while also adding humor to the commercial.

Research convention & codes

The Product my group and I chose is Dunkin' donuts. We did this for several reasons, not only do we all genuinely enjoy coffee and food from Dunkin' but we also believe it makes for a proper commercial. Doing something you care about makes it more enjoyable and therefore the results have better quality. Using Dunkin' Donuts as a product for a commercial within the school, is easier since the concept of needing coffee due to sleepiness makes for a good script.

After watching a couple commercials from Dunkin' the tone is lighthearted and playful, the commercials tend to be funny. There were commercials for food and for coffee, the food ad focused more on the prices for quantity of food while the coffee was needed for an "afternoon slump" displaying their new  deal which is two dollar coffee throughout certain times in the afternoon. Our group will most likely do a scene with coffee to target the tired majority as we are in a school and it will make the commercial relatable.

Most of the commercials have lighting that is bright. The locations tends to be a workplace or an office which goes well with the location of a school. If we choose a bright day to film, hopefully our commercial will bring Dunkin into a positive light, fulfilling its purpose. In order to bring a comical tone into the play, we will try to come up with a good line that jokes with the audience yet still makes Dunkin' appealing.  Our group may struggle with coming up with a funny scenario to make coffee important and we may struggle with having a film day full of sun.

Introductory

My name is Andrea, I am a senior at Fort Lauderdale High School. Currently there are three main priorities in my life: College, lacrosse and work. As school has always been very important to me, college is my next step, which means much of my time is dedicated to perfecting my applications and  trying to get a scholarship for lacrosse. I am in a very indecisive stage in my life right now as I feel like my future depends on these next few months. Through all the stress, staying happy is a priority for myself, i always dedicate time to my friends and going out to do fun things.

Family wise, the only people I consider my immediate family is my mom and brother. I live with my mom so we have a better relationship. I grew up with two brothers but my brother is now in the marines, in North Carolina. My dad lives in Texas so I only see him about twice a year. Friends are very important to me, even though people say "blood is family", I have friends that are there for me more then family is.

The last thing that is an important part of who I am are my values. I love politics and take interest in the topics of wealth and the powerful. It falls into my values as I believe that happiness is a necessary part of living and that money is not, money is what corrupts humanity and fills us with sin. My future jobs and studies will fall into the area of law and politics.God plays into my values, as I believe in a higher being and to me God is a certainty within my life. The way I work on myself as a person reflects christian values.
